How beaded curtains are made, from bead to finished curtain

A graphic beaded curtain looks simple from a distance. Up close it is thousands of small decisions. Here is how beaded curtains are made, and where the cost sits, written for product developers and buyers.

1. How beaded curtains are made: the beads

Beads come from three sources, depending on look and budget:

Glass beads made in our glass furnaces. Specialty beads such as dotted or Venetian styles are small runs, and larger glass beads can be annealed for strength.

Acrylic beads, injection-moulded and dyed to your colour.

Faux capiz discs for the shell look without using shell, in 10 to 30 mm sizes. We make them three ways: resin cast to shape (no cutting waste), dyed acrylic cut to shape, and, in development, laminated pearl chips (not yet available).

Weight matters as much as look. Very thin discs tangle and do not hang straight. Heavier, larger discs make a portal, a beaded room divider or a valance fall correctly.

2. Colour matching for beaded valances and curtains

Beads are dyed to a colour reference (Pantone or a chip) and checked against a sample before stringing. Colour variants of an existing style are usually cheaper than a new style, because the shape, bead size and stringing plan are already proven.

3. Stringing a beaded door curtain to a count sheet

A 90 x 200 cm graphic curtain can carry about 11,800 beads. Each strand is strung to a colour-count sheet so the pattern lines up edge to edge, then fixed to a wooden dowel. This is hand work: there is no automation for stringing a beaded curtain, which is why labour is a large part of the cost.

4. Where the cost sits in a beaded curtain

When a curtain lands above target, the levers are:

Bead size and material: the largest single driver.

Construction: how many strands and how tightly they sit.

Strand spacing: touching strands cost more than spaced strands.

Dowel and packing.

Maximum height: shortening a valance can take real money out of the bead count.

We show these as a rough cost sheet before sampling, so you can choose the trade-off between look and price.

5. Faux capiz: three ways to get the shell look

Some buyers prefer to avoid real capiz shell, so they ask for faux capiz shell. Cast-to-shape resin saves the waste of cutting discs from a sheet, dyed acrylic gives a thinner, lighter disc, and laminated pearl chips are a route we are still developing. For a capiz room divider or wall hanging, weight and diameter decide whether it drapes properly.

6. Samples and approval

Sampling typically takes 16 to 20 days, with some beads made first so the colour and size can be approved. Photos go to you for approval before anything ships.

Good to Know

Questions about how beaded curtains are made

Are beaded curtains made by hand?

Yes. Beads can be machine-made, but stringing a patterned curtain is hand work, strand by strand.

Why do bead curtains cost more than they look?

Because of the number of beads and the hours of stringing. A graphic curtain can hold over 11,000 beads.

Can you make a curtain in a custom colour?

Yes. We dye beads to a Pantone or a sample.

What is the difference between a valance and a curtain?

A valance covers the top of a window or door; a curtain runs the full height. The construction is the same, but a valance uses fewer beads.
