Beaded curtain size guide: sizes and specs for buyers

Most beaded curtain sizes look simple on a product listing: a width and a length. Behind those two numbers sit four more decisions that change the look, the weight and the price: how many strands, how far apart, what size of bead and how the bottom edge is shaped. This beaded curtain size guide is written for buyers and product developers who need to specify a curtain clearly enough for a manufacturer to quote it, sample it and make it the same way every time.

Beaded curtain size guide: widths

Width is set by the opening the curtain is meant for.

Standard doorway: interior doors in North America are commonly 28 to 36 inches wide, and a curtain around 90 cm (about 35 in) covers most of them; for 36 in doors and wider openings, a 120 cm (about 47 in) curtain fits better.

Wide openings: double doors, patio doors and open-plan arches need wider pieces or two curtains hung side by side.

Windows: width follows the window or the rod, plus a few centimetres if the valance sits outside the frame.

If a curtain is meant to fit many doors, as most retail curtains are, choose a width that covers the common door size and tell customers how to shorten or trim it at home. Our guide on how to hang beaded curtains covers that.

Drops: long beaded curtains, short beaded curtains and valances

Full length: a full-length doorway curtain is typically around 90 x 200 cm (about 35 x 79 in). Long beaded curtains in this range should stop just above the floor so strands do not drag.

Portal and wall-hanging sizes: a 90 x 67 cm format that works over a doorway or on a wall, and 76 x 140 cm portals in our design library.

Short beaded curtain: a third to half of the opening, for kitchen windows, cabinets and half-doors.

Valance: the shortest drop, dressing the top of a window or doorway.

Height is one of the strongest cost levers in a beaded curtain. Every centimetre of drop adds beads to every strand, so a modest reduction in length can make a real difference to the price.

Strand count and spacing

Strand count is the width divided by the strand pitch, the distance from the centre of one strand to the next. As an illustration, our 90 x 200 cm Lapis Hour doorway has 40 strands, about 2.25 cm apart, and our 120 cm curtains carry 60 strands, about 2 cm apart.

Touching or near-touching strands give a dense, private curtain and the clearest graphic pattern. They also cost the most.

Spaced strands let light and view through, use fewer beads and suit plain or accent designs.

Shaped spacing, closer at the sides and wider in the middle, is sometimes used for portals.

Spacing is best agreed on a sample, because the same pitch looks different with different bead sizes.

Bead size and bead count

Bead size sets the scale of the pattern and the number of beads per strand. Smaller beads give finer detail but more beads to string; larger beads give a bolder look and fewer beads. A graphic curtain may use a single round bead size throughout, while a border design can use two sizes.

To see how quickly the numbers grow: a densely strung 90 x 200 cm graphic curtain can carry about 11,800 beads, while a spaced design of the same size, such as our Lapis Hour doorway, uses about 3,100. Each one is strung by hand, so bead size is the largest single driver of cost, followed by construction and spacing.

Edges and shapes

The bottom edge is set strand by strand. Straight, scalloped, pointed, swag and arched edges are all written into the stringing plan as a length for each strand, so they repeat exactly across a production run.

How to write a beaded curtain spec sheet

A spec sheet a manufacturer can quote from usually covers:

Product type: door curtain, valance, room divider or portal.

Finished size: width and the longest drop, plus the shortest drop if the edge is shaped.

Strand count or pitch, or a reference photo showing the density you want.

Beads: material, shape and size for the main bead and any accents.

Colours: Pantone references or physical chips for each bead colour.

Pattern: an artwork or a reference image; the manufacturer turns this into a colour-count sheet.

Top fixing: wooden dowel, rod, rod pocket or fabric header, and its length.

Edge shape and any end beads.

Packing: inner packing, carton size, labels and barcodes.

Quantity per colourway and the destination port or warehouse.

If you do not have every answer, send what you have. We fill the gaps with recommendations, show a rough cost sheet before sampling and usually have a sample ready in 16 to 20 days. Size affects minimums too, since a valance and a full-length curtain use very different amounts of material, so put the quantity you are planning on the sheet and we will tell you whether it works.

Good to Know

Questions buyers ask about beaded curtain sizes

What is the standard size of a beaded door curtain?

A full-length doorway curtain is typically around 90 x 200 cm, about 35 x 79 in, which suits most single interior doors.

How long should long beaded curtains be?

Long enough to stop just above the floor, so the strands hang freely without dragging.

What counts as a short beaded curtain?

Anything from a valance up to about half the height of the opening.

How many strands does a beaded curtain have?

It depends on the width and the pitch. Our 2027 designs use 40 strands on a 90 cm curtain and 60 on a 120 cm curtain.

Does a smaller curtain always cost less?

Usually, because fewer beads are strung, but bead size, spacing and pattern matter as much as the dimensions.
