Beaded room dividers and door portals, made to order

Beaded room dividers do a job a doorway curtain does not. They screen part of an open room, mark the entrance to a nook or frame a doorway as a feature, and they are seen from both sides and from a distance. That changes how they are designed: the shape, the density and the weight all matter more than on a curtain that simply fills a door frame. We make beaded room dividers and door portals to order for retailers, brands, hospitality designers and event companies.

Three ways to build a bead divider

Full-width screen: a beaded curtain room divider that runs edge to edge, with strands close enough to soften the view behind. Density is set by strand spacing.

Arched portal: strands are cut to different lengths so the bottom edge rises into an arch, leaving a clear opening in the middle. The arch frames the passage rather than blocking it.

Framed portal: a border of beads down both sides and across the top, with the centre left open, developed on a sample.

We have developed a 90 x 67 cm wall-hanging and door-portal format that can be hung over a doorway or on a wall, which gives retailers one product that sells for two uses. Our 2027 design library adds door portals at 76 x 140 cm and room dividers at 90 x 180 cm and 120 x 180 cm.

Designing a divider that hangs straight

A divider is often hung in the middle of a room, where any twist or tangle is obvious. Three things keep it tidy:

Strand weight: heavier beads, or a heavier bead at the end of each strand, help strands settle after movement.

Spacing: strands that are too close catch on each other; strands that are too far apart look thin from across the room. We set spacing on the sample.

The top fixing: strands are fixed to a wooden dowel or rod in a set order, so the pattern stays in register when the divider is rehung.

For an arched or framed portal, the strand-by-strand lengths are written onto the colour-count sheet so every piece in the order has the same curve.

Materials for beaded room dividers

Glass hangs straightest, acrylic keeps large widths light, wood suits natural interiors, and faux capiz discs give a capiz room divider look; see faux capiz curtains, and our acrylic vs glass beads guide for the full comparison.

Mixed designs are common. A wood portal with a glass border, or an acrylic divider with a band of faux capiz discs, can give a strong look at a sensible cost.

Graphic and border designs

Graphic dividers are planned on a colour-count sheet, bead by bead, so motifs such as chevrons, waves, arches and florals line up across the strands. Border designs can use two bead sizes: a larger bead in the frame and a smaller one in the field. A rendering of the design is a useful step before sampling, so the pattern can be agreed before beads are strung.

Where beaded room dividers are used

Studio apartments and dorm rooms, to separate a sleeping area.

Salons, spas and clinics, to screen treatment areas without a solid wall.

Restaurants and bars, as a soft divide between dining zones or at a service door.

Retail stores, as fitting-room entrances and display backdrops.

Events, as photo backdrops, entrances and stage frames.

Cost and quantities

Width, height and density drive the bead count, and the bead count drives the cost. A portal uses fewer beads than a full screen of the same size, and a shorter drop uses fewer again. We show the options on a rough cost sheet before sampling, and samples are usually ready in 16 to 20 days.

Minimums are set per design, so give us the number of pieces you need for each.

Good to Know

Questions buyers ask about beaded room dividers

What is the difference between a beaded room divider and a door portal?

A divider screens part of a room, while a portal frames a doorway and leaves a clear opening. Both are strung the same way.

Can a beaded room divider hang from the ceiling?

It can hang from any rod or track that carries its weight. Tell us the fixing and we will design the top to suit.

How do you stop a bead divider from tangling?

By choosing strand weight and spacing on the sample, and fixing strands to the dowel in a set order.

Can you make an arched portal in our size?

Yes. Width, drop and the shape of the arch are set per order and written into the stringing sheet.

Do you make capiz room dividers?

We make the look with faux capiz discs in resin or dyed acrylic, not real shell.
